Okay so it's been how long since I've updated my LJ?  I just never know what to blog about.

Finally found void-filler post-ATLA, and it's Fullmetal Alchemist.  I am always waiting for Thursday FMA video stream day on tenterhooks :D because it is delicious and awesome.  FMA and Soul Eater, actually, which I found a while back and discovered was awesome—it's like what would happen if HP Lovecraft wrote a shonen anime.

Also, Project Runway is back YESSSSSS this makes me so ridiculously happy

Having trouble deciding what to do for NaNo this fall, if anything.  I have Daybreak (re-named Stay on the Sunny Side; urban fantasy w/ vampires and mages and werewolves, you know the drill) which is now a lot more hammered out and ready to be written; then I've also got I'll Tell You Everything Tomorrow (magical girls and serious business), or Eleventh Hour (teenage mage hijinks).  Or there's probably an idea that I haven't even thought up yet.  I've also been toying with the idea of generating story events randomly and trying to connect them together.  Of course, I don't even know if I'm going to be able to set aside the time for it what with class and everything else that I do...

Attempting to teach myself Japanese; can now write and speak some pretty simple sentences.  I'm trying to teach myself a few Kanji a day.  It's pretty neat.

Maybe I should post drawings here or something.

...so yeah.

I just archive-binged xkcd, and it was awesome.

Also, I have a cold and it is terrible.  Especially when I need to be doing homework.

Look, updating again!

I've been reading Penny & Aggie for years, and it's been great. But I just really don't know where they're going with this most recent arc, and it's frustrating the heck out of me. Also, I hate Marshall, and it has nothing to do with what he just did that earned him the ire of most of the readership—he's just so annoying. And yet I cannot stop reading. *sigh*

On a slightly more positive note, I am already running ahead of my goal for NaNoWrimo at 21k+ for Nov. 1, so things are looking up. It is about vampires, which probably makes me kind of creepy, but it's actually a very sweet and (relatively) cheerful story. Despite being about the undead.  Vampires seem to tbe the big thing this year—well, they've been popular in literature for a while (I counted 20+ in the YA section at a bookstore once—and individual series, not single books), but this year there's a metric ton of people doing them, if the Fantasy subforum is anything do judge by.  It's a little odd, but also kind of funny.  I don't think I've seen this many people doing the same narrow subgenre in the four years I've done NaNo previously.

Speaking of vampires, I just started playing in a LARP that does a Vampire: the Masquerade game and it's kind of awesome!  So every other week I dress up and play Kait Marsh: Ace (Vampire) Attorney.  So now I guess I'm an official nerd, or something.  Not that I wasn't one already, I guess.

Dick Blick is slowly leeching away all my money.  I'm beginning to wonder if having one so close is such a blessing after all.  I just cannot resist the lure of watercolor pencils and nice markers.

Mm, interesting things... that's about it, anyway.

Yoshitoshi ABe's going to be at MCAD's Schoolgirls & Mobile Suits this year and it's the weekend after I go back to school T-T I really wish I could go—it would be so cool.

I finished a lot of books I'd been meaning to get back to recently—Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett, Fly By Night by Frances Hardinge, and the Art of War by Sun Tzu. They were all made of awesomesauce.

Have you seen Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog? If you haven't, you should go watch it now, because it's only available for free until tomorrow. And because it is made of win. I'm starting to think that I should really try and look into watching Buffy, because apparently Joss Whedon cannot be involved with something that is not made out of awesomesauce.

And omgomgomgyay Avatar finale is tonight.

Also, I think it's really true that I at least need a pretty detailed outline for any really big writing projects; I feel a lot better about the stuff I'm writing when I know where I'm going next and have fun stuff to look forward to in the future. I also think I like Storyist for writing—alas, if only it were free, but I think I might actually shell out the $59 for it. It organizes things in a way that works really well for me.

After months and months of waiting, finally! :D :D I'm kind of sad it's nearly over, though. I wish I'd gotten to watching it earlier.

I'm failing at summerwrite so badly right now—I haven't written very much at all since the beginning of summer. I think I just need a little more preparation before I start something, like have it crazy outlined like I did that one year for NaNoWriMo that went well. Maybe I'll just see if I can go all-out in August and how many words I can rack up there. It's just so frustrating—I feel like I'm not sure where I want to go with most of my ideas.

I should really use LJ more often. I kind of miss being active on it.

So I just finished re-setting up my computer. Because this morning, my hard drive very suddenly died, taking with it everything from after the beginning of April. Including everything from summerwrite.

Well, I guess at least it happened at the beginning instead of in August, or something, so thank God for small blessings, but... really.

So I'm doing summerwrite, and I can't make myself like what I'm writing. It's just all coming out wrong. And I can tell, because I've written stuff that felt completely right and natural and it's all—gah!

I don't know. Maybe I need to start over, or pull one of my other ideas out of the Idea Bin and give that a go, hope it goes faster sort of thing. I like how SummerWrite is a little less frenetic than NaNo, and it gives you a lot more room to decide to do something completely different. I'm just a little worried that if I'm having problems this early on (Day 3), it's going to be a long ride to the end of August.

I walked to Barnes and Noble yesterday when I happened to be nearby, which turned out to be a good thing since we got quite a bit of snow today. In a fit of unprecedented spendiness, I bought myself not one but three books: The Truth by Terry Pratchett, and The Pinhoe Egg and Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. I'm pretty near to done with The Truth already, and really enjoying it. Pratchett rarely if ever disappoints me. (Same with Jones, really.) And now I've managed to make an even longer list of Books Yet to Buy:

The ListCollapse )

PS Day of Black Sun? Epic awesome yay! So looking forward to new episodes, though no one seems to know when The Western Air Temple will be on...

Also, I figured out how to draw eyes in a style that pleases me, :D:D:D hooray!

Oops! I can't believe I'm watching Avatar when it's a show that's only for boys. Because, clearly, my role-models should be Barbie, Polly Pocket, and whatever the heck Diva Starz are. I guess it's time to go buy some glittery makeup!

...okay, sarcasm off. But seriously--I don't understand why:
1. Avatar: the Last Airbender toys are categorized under "Boys" on the Mattel website
2. There are no action figures of girls that rock, as compared with fashion dolls.

I know Mattel has promised to be more egalitarian and produce some toys of the girls... but really, finally there's a series for kids with good female role models that get to kick butt too and yet they waste their time making completely inaccurate figures and Generic Fire Nation Soldier action figures? (And Mattel? You're doing it wrong. In the battle on Kyoshi Island? Sokka wasn't wearing his warrior garb. He was wearing a dress.)

Given that I am a college student, I should probably not be cheesed about this, but A) I want a Toph action figure, dang it and B) little girls shouldn't be shunted into antiquated gender roles so early.

In other news, I have seen the leaked episodes, and they are made of win XDDDDDD OMG EVERYTHING

Also, I can't do NaNoWriMo. It's just not happening this month. *sigh*
